Why You Should Watch… Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club is an anime series that concluded with 26 episodes. It’s a satirical romantic comedy show and frankly if you like YA, I am willing to bet you will like this. The characters break the fourth wall a few times, and if you’re looking for a snapshot of the series in a few lines of dialogue, this is it.

Tamaki: Haruhi and I are the main characters, so we must be love interests!
Other characters: What about us?
Tamaki: You’re just the homosexual supporting cast!

What’s it about? Basically, Haruhi (that brown haired one, third from the right), stumbles into an abandoned music room in her high school, Ouran Academy. It turns out that music room #3 is the base of the Host Club–an organization run by six boys who entertain the filthy rich, bored and ditzy girls at their school every afternoon. Haruhi breaks an expensive vase and then has to work off her debt by becoming a host.

This is made a little complicated by the fact that they originally mistake her for a boy.

While there are tropes present in OHSHC that are very, very often acknowledged by the characters, for example, the strong and silent type, the “princely” type, the “boy-Lolita” type… I swear, I couldn’t even make up these names–you’ll just have to find out what I mean for yourself.

If you like self-aware romantic comedies with the kind of weird shenanigans that can only happen when you mix one girl into a group of a whole lot of testosterone, well, do I really have to say it? Check out Ouran High School Host Club. Plus, the theme song and opening sequence are kind of awesome and start with the words “kiss kiss, fall in love!”

How can you not love a show like that?
